To bring gas production in Groningen to zero as soon as possible, the expansion of the nitrogen plant near Zuidbroek is a necessity. The expansion will allow a reduction of about 7 billion m3<\/sup>\u00a0Groningen gas per year will be realized. That is over 25% of domestic consumption of low-calorific gas in 2017. Blending nitrogen with (imported) high-calorific gas can produce pseudo Groningen gas suitable for household central heating and cooking appliances.<\/p>\n

The plant covers a site of about 12 hectares and will have a capacity of 180,000 m3 of nitrogen per hour. This capacity is more than 10 times larger than the existing nitrogen plant in Zuidbroek.
\nGasunie has awarded the construction of the three air separation units for the nitrogen plant at Zuidbroek to Air Products.
